Thank heavens there wasn't any snow about otherwise we could have caused an avalanche. It all came out of a chat I had with Wayne Horsburgh, a country and western singer from Australia who is on tour in Britain at the moment. WAYNE HORSBURGH Land Of Enchantment
Final Frontier / Bandera Waltz / El Paso City / King Of The Cowbovs / Time To Sing A Yodelin' Song / The Land Of Enchantment / The Yellow Rose Of Texas / Cattle Call / Devil Woman / Sioux City Sue / My Adobe Hacienda / The Night Guard / The Green Green Grass Of Home /I Just Want To Dance With You
Producers: Bob Howe & Michael Vidale Rotation Records RR 2002 (42:04)
Wayne Horsburgh was born in Australia in 1955 and began his singing career at the age of 11, both on television and with a local dance band. After leaving school he combined singing with working in a bank for several years but his career took a change of direction in 1973 after seeing Slim Whitman during an Australian tour. Immediately impressed by Whitman's yodeling, Horsburgh soon included yodels in his own singing act.
In 1978 he toured with Buddy Williams, which established him as a major talent on the Australian scene. He picked up several awards and since 1984 has recorded a string of albums, highlighted by his undoubted yodeling ability and the songs of his native country. In the early '90s, while touring the States, Wayne appeared as part of the Western Music Festival in Tuscon, Arizona, which also included Roy Rogers (his idol), Riders In The Sky and Sons Of The Pioneers; he briefly toured in the UK in 1992.
This latest release ranges from songs that demonstrate his respect for Marty Robbins (El Paso City, Devil Woman) to cowboy material such as My Adobe Hacienda and Cattle Call. Apart from its writer Dusty Rogers (Roy Jr), I have never heard any other singer perform King Of The Cowboys, a tasteful tribute to Roy Sr. Other memories of Wayne's time with Roy come with The Final Frontier (a nice duet with Judy Anne Barnes) and The Night Guard, which features a very fine yodel.
The title track, a beautifully descriptive ballad, was originally popularised by its writer Michael Martin Murphey on his 1989 album of the same name. The obvious influence of Slim Whitman shows clearly on the best version of Bandera Waltz that 1 have heard since Whitman's 1950s recording.
Among the newer numbers are Time To Sing A Yodelin'Song, which ideally suits his voice and style, and I Just Want To Dance With You, which is entertaining but perhaps fails to match the popular version recorded by Daniel O' Donnell.
There is little to fault this album. For those inclined, it has yodels (a dying art now), cowboy material and true country songs, such as Green Green Grass 0f Home.
The backing, which features steel guitar and fiddle, is excellent throughout. To my mind, Wayne is at his best with yodels and, since it remains a well-liked art form in Australia, his continuing popularity is not in question.

The 25th Annual HODAG COUNTRY FESTIVAL in Rhinelander, Wisconsin was a huge success over the weekend of July 11th through 14th. My show on the Thursday night, backed by the Polka Band, 'The Music Connection' was very well received by the 25,000 people in front of the big stage. I was followed by Country Music Stars, Lorrie Morgan and then Sammy Kershaw. It was a fantastic night and the crowd reaction was amazing. The popular Aussie song 'Lovers Carousel' was still the favourite song of the night with the entire crowd waving arms and swaying to the music. I was proud to have the 'Music Connection' back me at the Hodag Country Festival as this was the first time in 25 years that 'Polka Music' was featured amongst some of the biggest Country Music acts and bands during this long running Festival. Other artists like Toby Keith, Neal McCoy, Alabama, The Wilkinson's, Carolyn Dawn Johnson, Chad Brock, Blake Shelton, Leroy Van Dyke and Darryl Worley had that crowd swelled to over 45,000 people by the time the weekend was over.
See the crowd photo below, and this was only a part of it...
WAYNE HORSBURGH has long been the reigning
king of easy listening middle of the road
country for me. Along with folks like PAUL
McCloud he's carved a well deserved reputation
for consistently listenable albums, and here's
another.
14 favourites with a 'New Mexico' flavour. A
bit of MARTY ROBBINS, some singing cowboy
songs with a bright clean production from
CAPITAL NEWS' own BOB HOWE (cyberBob to
most) and MICHAEL VIDALE with Tommy Grasso's
pedal steel and an odd touch of brass here and
there.
Land Of Enchantment, the title track, is a
MICHAEL MARTIN MURPHY western song and along with others by
ROY ROGERS, DUSTY ROGERS, and titles like Bandera
Waltz, El Paso City, Yellow Rose of Texas, Sioux City Sue, My Adobe Hacienda should
get you on the right track for this selection of
tunes. So roll back the rug and two step
around the floor while still being able to hold a
conversation in the moonlight of course.
